Gear Up For Achnabreck Bike Fest

15 June 2007  |
People in West Argyll are being encouraged to take to the saddle on Saturday 23 June at the Fire Tower Trail to help celebrate National Bike Week. Cyclists of all ages and abilities are encouraged to take part in guided rides which start at 2pm. More experienced riders can brave the renowned 19km Fire Tower mountain bike trail and beginners can opt for a gentler route along the Crinan Canal. Once the bike ride is over, bikers can enjoy a BBQ (from 1pm - 7pm), live music from 6pm - 9pm and a bonfire. Lesley MacFadyen, for Forestry Commission Scotland said: "A family day out to the trails is a fantastic way for kids to burn off all that energy whilst mums and dads follow on behind, and we would urge people to come along this weekend and give it a go. “Children seem to love mountain biking, and it's a hobby we hope they'll keep doing, or at least come back to at a later age. It is great fun and also a superb way to improve fitness levels for people of all ages." The Fire Tower Trail has a little bit of something for everyone, from gentle tracks to free-riding. Routes are graded blue, red and black. Highlights of the trail include the Twisted Fire Starter - a black-graded, short technical section round the summit of a hill or bypass this and head straight for a swoopy bermed descent to the steep, stone-pitched Quarry Drop; Murder Hill, the steepest climb of the trail; the Water Splash - ride or wade, depending on how much rain there has been...; and the North Shore section which is the finale of the trail. For more information on the event call 01546 602 518. Non riders are also welcome. Entry to the guided bike ride is free. All children must be accompanied by an adult. Bikes can be hired from Crinan Cycles on 01546 603 511 in advance. All children most be accompanied by an adult. Bikes need to be in good condition and helmets must be worn. Thanks to McKerral Haulage for the provision of a trailer as a band stand. For more information on Forestry Commission Scotland's mountain bike trails visit www.forestry.gov.uk/mtbscotland
